Raleigh’s Best, presented by The News & Observer, is decided by community vote. In its fifth year, more than 4,700 local businesses and organizations competed across 259 categories, and residents cast over 429,000 votes. Kurtz & Blum has been recognized every year since the program began, and this is the firm’s third straight year earning Gold in Family Law.

The 2026 Raleigh’s Best magazine features Kurtz & Blum in its cover story, “In Your Corner.” The piece looks at why the firm keeps criminal defense and family law under one roof, and what that means when a client’s case crosses both.
“A criminal charge and a custody case require different instincts, and we staff them that way,” said Seth Blum, founding partner. “Either way, our clients get a team that tells them the truth about where they stand.”
Senior family law attorney Chuanita Williams Smalls put it this way: “Family law and criminal cases are handled with different approaches and different strategies. That’s why we keep them distinct. But they also cross over in the way life plays out.”
